Design Technology Curriculum

Aim

We believe that teaching Design Technology will enable our children to actively contribute to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of themselves, their community and society in general. Design Technology teaches how to take risks and so become more resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable.

At St Fidelis, our Design Technology Curriculum topics teach the key skills of designing, making and evaluating, whilst at the same time introducing children to technical language to use across the subject, drawing from the National Curriculum. When designing each product, emphasis is placed on the values, needs and wants of the end user.

We are proud that we provide our children with purposeful, practical opportunities which encourage our children to solve real-life problems or learn life-skills including:

  • Learning how to cook, while considering what is needed for a healthy, nutritious diet by making sandwiches (year 1), soup (year 4) and bread (year 5). These topics enable teachers to model culinary skills of cutting, using ovens and slow cookers as well as other specific skills linked to each type of food being made.

  • Having clear tasks which build children’s skills over time, for example the topic of moving mechanisms; creating a car for wacky races (year 2), mythical moving beast (year 3) and labyrinths (year 6).
